Atta Noodles and Multigrainz Noodles

maggiHurray — taste bhi, health bhi  — WRONG.

Everyone loves Maggi — I wish Nestle would just make it healthier. The ‘atta’ and ‘multigranz” noodles are marketed as healthy but they simply are not.

There are two components to Maggi noodle products — the noodle and the tastemaker flavouring packet.

The list of ingredients for the flavouring packet is very long with at least 20 different spices, preservatives and additives — the first being sugar! The tastemaker is not so tasty according to me — when I make it for my kids(yes, I do make it at times for my kids), I add very little of the tastemaker, add my own garlic, ginger chili flakes and soya sauce.

The noodles which are a much larger component of what you are eating is what Nestle really should make healthier — instead of spending so much on false advertising and packaging, they could just use better ingredients. The atta noodles does use atta or whole wheat flour but the problem is the high quantities of oil and salt in the product. Traditional pasta, even the store bought variety, does not have oil or salt and that is why a good brand of pasta is much healthier than these processed noodles.

The main reason for the use of oil and salt is to preserve shelf life. The second reason is that people love salt and fat — it’s the dirty secret of the food industry. Salt, fat and sugar(no sugar in this case) have addictive properties so it leaves the person eating wanting more and this is exactly what Maggi wants. Use good quality pasta or noodles, add garlic, ginger, soya sauce, a bit of oyster sauce, and sesame oil and you have a good tasting alternative.

Bottom Line: If you do use Maggi, use it as a back up when you don’t have time to cook and add plenty of vegetables, and add an egg or tofu for protein.
