The wars of the future will be fought not over land, or power, but for something we many times take for granted…water. I recently watched the documentary film “Thirst”where authors Alan Snitow and Deborah Kaufman demonstrated the rapid worldwide privatization of municipal water supplies, and the effect these purchases are having on local economies. The film shows how population, pollution, mismanagement and scarcity are turning water into the “Blue Gold” of the 21st century.
Stockton in California, Cochabamba in Bolivia and a small town in Rajasthan, India are taken as examples where the people have fought to preserve water as their basic human right and where multinational corporations have tried to make water a commodity by staking claim to land where water is sourced. The three towns are on different parts of the world as well as on varied steps of the economic ladder showing that corporatization of water can happen anywhere in the world. The film is an eye-opener and makes you think about how our children will manage in a world with less of this precious resource. Beware of privatization of water sources in your community. If you cannot find a copy of the film, there is a book inspired by the movie. For more information click here.
